Commenting on the American Web Design Awards 2016 Digital Media Art College

Each year The Creative Group hosts its American Web Design Awards to showcase the many talented individuals and teams who are top notch in creating websites, apps, social media content and campaigning, advertising and video and of course UX or UI design. TCG, a Robert Half company is a fast track 5-star staffing agency that works with some of the most prestigious agencies and firms around the globe. This year’s winner (close to 100) has really shone by showing some of their finest work for this competition. In this week’s blog, we highlight a few of them.

Approximately 100 winners were listed on TCG’s website. We think they should have listed them under category, then list of winners by chronologically. It was tough to do a snapshot because each candidate had a hyperlink added to see who won what. How the project was awarded was only shown if you click their link.

Web sites that caught our attention is were clean, eye catching and using font’s with punctuation to emphasize a point. The day of busy websites seems to be happily over. People these days don’t have the attention span they used to when the Internet first surfaced. A good example of the clean but effective method is that of Streetsense’ Reston Town Center’s site and Firmseek’s MSK website design. The copy is strong and bold the images are a slice of life and use the psychology needed for the viewer to relate. Congrats to the agencies and individuals that submitted. Stay inspired and keep entering contests if you didn’t win on this one.

On a side note: Entering contests are a great way to showcase your work to hiring creative directors and CEO’s.

Equity Creative used animation to steal the hearts of the judges. Fun cartoons created with simplicity.  This seems to be the trending theme used by many of the entrants, but we thought Equity did a great job.

Pixel Parlor gave a great presentation for the Social Media category. Their use and choice of color scheme was very effective in giving us an almost comic book appeal.  They continuously hit the branding button by using this effective method. Good job PP!

The App category Aerovironment killed it with Posichargeprocore. The App allows industry pros to charge up forklifts with mobile phones. They did a great job of making the App easily navigable.

What we know is that these types of contests are great ways for students to get exposure. One thing suggested is to send a congratulations email to each agency listed in the winner’s circle you’d like to connect with. Who knows, eventually it could lead to a permanent or freelance job.
