Joshua Ott
Today in the spotlight: Joshua Ott, professional photographer and proud DMAC graduate. Josh was recently featured in The World’s Greatest Erotic Art of Today – Volume Five. Josh’s featured piece originally started as an artistic idea for a project that he just wanted to play around with; he had no original intention of sending it in to any competition. This cool idea came out to be a stunning work of art – which became very successful piece at Art Undressed in Miami – and after hearing about the competition for a feature in the book, Josh knew the piece was perfect to submit.
Like many other successful artists today, Joshua came to DMAC looking forward to pursuing his artistic career. However, he actually started in 3D animation, working with motion capture and graphic design. “As fun as it was,” Josh stated he was a extroverted people person, and realized that sitting behind a computer was not his calling. Instead, he found himself in the sociable world of photography, in which he focuses now mainly on fashion and commercial work. The beautiful fact about Josh’s work, and really any photographer’s work, is that every piece is different. What Josh loves about Photography, is that he takes control of a story, and tell it through a single image. Josh’s main goal through his photography is to connect with people by creating art they find beautiful and meaningful. By pursuing this, Josh has confirmed that photography is the most fitting and fulfilling career for him.
For all the future aspiring photographers out there, Josh has a few tips and words of advice. If you have a passion for photography, just go out and do it! Focus on your work, do it daily, and the longer you practice the better you’ll get. Don’t take pictures just to take them, focus on where you’re trying to go, and what message you’re trying to convey. Look to other art for inspiration, but don’t lose sight of your particular style. If taking the commercial route, stand out, but make sure that your pieces still relate to people, and are marketable. Overall, practice your art while being true to your style and visions.
